Taoism
Taoism is also known as Oriental Shamanism. It is an ancient system of healing, based upon energy flows observed in Nature. The basic Medicine Wheel used is that of the Five Elements.
The name "The Tao" is used both to describe the path and the Source; the everythingness of life and the nothingness of pure spirit. Thus it is a truely integrative system.
Taoist practices are concerned predomintly with energy, or "chi". Humans are seen as beings between Father Sky/ Heaven and Mother Earth. These are two polar forces and energy flows from one to the other. Thus the human being is a channel for these forces to flow.
As energy can be seen in all areas of life, the Taoist practices are varied. They include:
- Chi Gung: energy execrises, including Tai Chi - Sexual Energetics: working with the sexual chi - Healing: using chi to bring health - Nutrition: using the chi of food to nourish the body - Meditation: stilling the mind to enable one to perceive the subtle realms of chi, and to recognise the authentic self
